When a shopping mall is taken over by a gang of organized crooks, it's up to a mild-mannered security guard to save the day.
Paul Blart is a mild-mannered man who works as a security guard in a New Jersey mall. For years, he has applied to become a cop, but he always fails the physical exam because he has hypogmycemia and tends to pass out when his blood sugar is low. One day, a gang of organized criminals put the mall under siege and take hostages. Blart becomes trapped inside, and because of his sense of duty, refuses to leave. He thus becomes the police department's eyes on the inside and attempts to stop the criminals on his own.
Kevin James tries hard with this but is badly hamstrung by the script he co-wrote and the lame casting of his fellow players.
Take Jayma Mays. One watches this film puzzling over whether she can act. She spends most of her time sitting pretty with nothing to do and her fellow supporting actors are equally uninteresting.
There would seem to be a lot of comedic potential in a sprawling, white-bread, suburban mall setting. But the film consistently disappoints with a string of less-than-hilarious gags. OK, Blart's Segue is cute the first time around but are we still supposed to be laughing after dozens of scoots among the shop stalls? (The unappealing heist subplot seems more like cheesy padding than inspired storytelling.)
I watched this on TBS with my 10-year-old son. He guffawed at many of James's pratfalls; I yawned. He wants a sequel; I say life is way too short. If you have a chance to see this movie, find a blender and put your hand in it because you will actually laugh more times while doing it.
If your even thinking about renting this movie, get a wiffle bat and knock yourself unconscious because your time will be better spent.
Inept bad guys, with ninja like moves who ride BMX bikes and skateboards in neither funny nor understandable. You have a gun. Get off your skateboard, aim and shoot him! The guy is on a segway for goodness sakes. They are not that fast.
I can not, not recommend this movie enough.
You want to see a movie about a lovable loser rent a John Candy movie...any John Candy movie will do. Even his worst movie is ten times better. Has a few surprises in store. The biggest is James, an unexpectedly nimble master of the face-plant, the failed jump, and the lopsided tumble. Paul Blart: Mall Cop is based on a screenplay by Kevin James, who plays the title character, and by writer and voice actor Nick Bakay. ...on the ring tone for Paul's borrowed phone: My bubble Gum by Rasheeda
...the first karaoke song: Runaway by Bon Jovi
...when Paul is leaving the house for work: Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra
...in the trailer: Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi
...in the bar: Runaway by Bon Jovi
...when he walks over to Amy at the end: I Can't Hold Back by Survivor
...when he starts singing in the video games: Detroit Rock City by Kiss Yes. An extra scene depicting Blart's wedding is shown about 20 seconds into the credits, but there's nothing after the credits. The extra scene is not worth sticking around for. a5c7b9f00b
